I am sewing along this season over at Project run & play and this week’s challenge was to design your own fabric. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to make for this challenge, at first I was thinking paint, but I ended up settling on dying fabric.
I started with some muslin (the cheap $1.99 stuff from Joann’s) and some powdered Rit dye in teal and pearl grey and created this fun dip dyed summer dress.
Before this project, my fabric dying experience was limited to tie dying t-shirts when I was younger. Turns out dying fabric is really easy and really fun, I kind of want to dye everything now!
To make my dress, I drafted a simple dress pattern with a curved top and gathered skirt. Then I sewed up my straps and skirt but before sewing them together, I dyed the straps and dip dyed the skirt in a bucket in my kitchen sink.
I love how the colors turned out, the grey has a bit of a chambray look to it.
I think my favorite parts of the dress are the pockets and little button detail on the sides. I sewed the pockets on before dying too so they got the same dip dye as the dress.
This was such a fun challenge! There are lots of amazing DIY fabrics being linked up over at Project run & play this week, go check the out!
